About
Hello! My name is Sandra Sanders, and education is an essential part of who I am. I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and I have been lucky enough to be an educator for over thirty years. I have taught a diverse number of classes (AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, college prep, inclusion, language literacy, written expression, executive function, SAT prep), while working with a wide age and range of learners (students with dyslexia and other related language-based learning differences, ADHD, Special Education, ESOL, honors, and gifted).
After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a secondary teacher certification from Stony Brook University, I began my career as a high school classroom teacher in a New York public school. Upon earning my Master’s Degree in Children’s and Adolescent Literature, I relocated to Maryland, where I have served as a public high school and independent school English teacher, English Department Chairperson, and Learning Specialist. A former Charles County Teacher of the Year and National Board Certified teacher, I hold a current English 7-12 Advanced Professional Certification in Maryland. I earned a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership at Notre Dame of Maryland University, and I possess a graduate certificate in Dyslexia and Language-Based Learning Disabilities from Southern New Hampshire University. I maintain a strong passion for education and lifelong learning. When I am not teaching, I love to read and write, to run, and to spend time with my family.

Vision
We believe in empowering students with the study skills and learning resources they need to achieve academic success. We provide uniquely personalized tutoring services to students of all ages and levels of experience. We view learning as a reciprocal process, and we structure our learning resource center to welcome and facilitate the joint growth of both the learners and the tutors through dialogue and learning development that acknowledges, as a foundation, the unique skills, talents, and culture students bring to the center.
Mission
Our mission is to know and value each of our learners and to educate the whole person in a learner-centered, supportive environment that values each student's dignity, self-worth, and potential. As the demands placed upon today’s learners differ somewhat from those placed upon previous generations, we ready students for the future by promoting twenty-first century learning skills. We prepare our learners to take a confident and independent approach to both the academic and personal challenges they will meet.
Goals
We work to enhance and strengthen the skills needed to read proficiently, to write clearly, to think critically, and to persevere through educational challenges. These skills are crucial in meeting today’s rigorous academic standards and for ultimately entering the workforce. We foster lifelong learning and problem-solving in order for students to adapt to an increasingly diverse and global society and to become stewards of their academic foundation. Our trust is placed in the ability of each student to become the informed and critical learner we seek to foster.
Test Prep
Students will be provided with pacing, time management, and other strategies to strengthen their test-taking abilities and to build their confidence. We will focus on developing critical reading, writing, and language skills for the following tests: SAT, ACT, AP English Literature and Composition, AP English Language and Composition, ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, and state tests.
One-on-One Tutoring
We take a comprehensive and collaborative approach in creating a plan and program that is right for every learner. Adjusting to different personalities and specific academic needs, we always find what works best. That's why we provide curriculum-based instruction, instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. We provide a uniquely personalized learning experience for each student.
Executive Function and Academic Coaching
Our executive function or academic coaching provides semester-long support to enable students to complete tasks both in and out of school. Our coaching lays a strong foundation for success because it enables students to make the best use of the tools and resources at their disposal and to develop self-confidence. We work with each student to create a personalized plan of action to promote the acquisition of critical cognitive skills such as attention and listening awareness, goal setting, organization, time management, task initiation, planning, and self-monitoring.
College Applications
Students receive one-on-one assistance with navigating the college application process. With a focus upon the rudiments of grammar and the fundamentals of answering a written prompt, the student is personally guided through the stages of the writing process, from brainstorming to outlining, from drafting and revising, and from proofreading to executing the final version of your college essay.
Small Group Learning
Small group learning enhances what students are learning in school through reviewing specific skills and concepts and encouraging students to ask questions and to exchange information. Students work together, while the tutor helps guide them, to think critically, to master course concepts, and to apply them to real-world situations. Students will deepen their understanding through engaging academic activities and games. These sessions can be tailored to specific content areas and can also be based on the topics and interests of the students in the group.
